USA Powerball Reaches Half-Billion Dollar Jackpot

This type of frenzy has only happened once before, when USA Mega Millions reached a jackpot of $500 million in March of this year. Now, it's USA Powerball's turn as it is expected to match or even surpass that record in this Wednesday's draw.

There were no winners on Saturday evening's draw which prompted lottery organizers to announce a new record jackpot of $425 million the following day. This has been upgraded to an estimated $500 million after lottery players have come out in line up for lottery tickets. That's an increase $175 million or more than 53% from last Saturday's draw.

If somebody wins this Wednesday, the lump cash option would pay out $327.4 million to that lucky player.

To get a chance at winning, players are advised not to wait for the last minute to buy tickets. They should also check for the local cutoff time, when their retailers are supposed to stop selling tickets. Tickets are supposed to go on sale up to 10:45pm Eastern Time. But local retailers are also constrained by store closing times and other factors. Players are advised to buy their tickets online as ticket resellers might have slower response times due to the clogged lines.

Tickets are being sold faster than ever and there is a 1 in 175 million chance for a number to win. This also means that there are 175 million unique number combinations. The chances of winning any USA Powerball prize is 1 in 32.
