US Efforts on Jamaican Lotto Scam Crackdown

Officials have launched a campaign to combat an increasing prevalence of lottery related scams that target the elderly, all coming from Jamaica. Police have begun to send out warnings about receiving phone calls from an 876 area code which is similar to the digits used within the United States; the calls are about lottery winnings which will ask recipients to mail tax checks in exchange for claiming the prize. Authorities have divulged that the lotto scams from Jamaica is only but a small fraction of cross-border lottery fraud that gets investigated each year. "We have a massive, massive problem and everyone knows it," said C. Steven Baker, the FTC's Midwest Region director based in Chicago.
